Romance novels offer a happy ending usually accompanied by warm fuzzy feelings, and, to a point, predictability. During these uncertain times, is it any surprise that more readers are seeking the comfort romance books provide? In this session, booksellers will hear from several guest speakers on a bevy of topics such as marketing romance books, who the romance reader is, who might be a romance reader, what a store is missing out on by not selling romance books, what type of events can be created, and more.

Join Newbery Award-winning authors Kwame Alexander and Jerry Craft in conversation as they discuss the roles booksellers played in their own success, how booksellers can encourage a love of reading, the importance of highlighting Black authors and illustrators, and to learn more about their upcoming projects.
A bookstore's unique voice is as important as the books it sells. During the current public health crisis, without customers browsing the stacks, stores have had to amplify their voices to break through the noise and harness the buying power of online shoppers. In this session, bookstore owners and social media managers will share how they developed their voices, got loud, and captured new customers and drove online sales. The panelists will also explore ideas on maximizing profitablility during this time of increased shipping all the while retaining their new customers.
Indies Introduce is all about what independent booksellers do best: Discovering exciting debut authors and sharing the best with readers across the country. You will hear about the title selection process from the bookseller panelists who curated the list and many of the debut authors will be present to read a short passage and answer a question posed by one of the panelists.
Celebrate the representation of Black girls in middle grade and young adult science fiction and fantasy stories as well as the Black female authors who create these characters and works. Authors Ebony Elizabeth Thomas, Dhonielle Clayton, and Tracy Deonn will be in conversation to discuss the fandom, world-building, stories, and characters that inspire and excite them as artists and readers.

Marketing is absolutely necessary for a business to be successful, and even more important for small, independent businesses. Without thoughtful marketing, your store may only be recommended a few times by people who happen to find you — but that’s it; there’s no real customer growth. In this session, you’ll hear from six guest speakers from small bookstores, who will share what works for their stores in a variety of marketing areas, including social media, newsletters, events, and general marketing.

This session features Angela Trigg of Haunted Bookshop in Mobile, Alabama, who has created a chatbot through which customers can place orders on the store’s website. The chatbot can detect if someone wants to order a book and then asks questions (like title, author, etc.) and records the answers to create an order note for the store through a third-party service. Booksellers will hear about the online tools Trigg used and how she set it up, as well as see a demonstration of how it works from the customer side.
